I really need some advice today...

I saw True Confessions of a Single Mother's post today and was thinking about our dilema.

See this cute face.

I know, I know you have seen Boo Boo La La's cute face a lot.
The trouble we are faced with right now is that she is four.  During the day she is 100% potty trained and has been for a while, a year or so...she was a bit stubborn and wanted to potty on her terms.

We went away for New Year's like usual - Miss K, who Boo Boo La La adores and is younger by almost two months, does not wear pull-ups to bed.  Boo Boo still did.

About a week later - the day after her 4th Birthday Party - she said.  "Mama, I am four now and I don't need to wear pull-ups to bed any more.  Miss K doesn't!"  Okay---well, you are usually dry in the morning.  Let's give it a go.

About one month later and after three crying pee pee bed wetting jags in two nights we had enough.

Mama and Daddy made Boo Boo put the pull-ups back on.  But, how do we get out of them?
  1. She sleeps like a ROCK.  Nothing wakes her up short of the apocolypse.
  2. She feels bad now, we are telling her she still needs to get up and go potty but the pull-up is just so she is not wet if she has an accident.  That it is not a big deal, she is STILL a big girl!
I was thinking of getting a calendar for her to put stars on for every morning her pull up is dry.

Do you think that will help?  Or hurt?  (because of the mornings she gets no sticker...I don't want her to feel bad if she has an accident...)

HELP!

I am anxious to see how people respond. We have just mastered the whole potty during the day thing and I am scared of the nighttime training. Z still goes to bed with a cup of water and wakes up soaked!! WE need to break that habit. I think if you both remain positive about it and use a sticker chart (maybe not on a calendar so she can't see her failures, just a plain chart) and then she can get a prize after so many stickers?? I don't know....good luck!!

My brother just potty-trained his daughter and they are trying to figure out the bed time thing too. It'll be interesting to find out what's worked for other people.

I didnt use pull ups at all with my son. hes 2 and fully potty trained and it took me about 3 months to do it. I felt like the pull ups were the same as diapers so i just let him pick out his big boy underwear. B usually doesnt go to bed until 9 so his last drink of anything is at 7pm. he only had one accident.. but i think limiting what they have to drink helps a lot. I think the sticker chart is a great idea. kids do these things on their own time frame some take longer than others ya know. Good luck with everything :)

We are in the same boat - Miranda sleeps like a rock, too. I talked to my mom about it, and she suggesting trying to pin down when the peeing was going on (with Miranda, it is usually within the first hour of being put to bed, or EARLY in the morning), and get yourself on a schedule to wake her up to use the potty. A pain, yes, but eventually, they get used to waking up to use the potty by themselves. My mom's two cents...

My Mom did this, and we did too, and it worked. We would send them to bed as usual. Then about 10pm or so when WE went to bed, we'd lift them out of bed and put them on the potty. They were basically still asleep but they'd urinate. And their bodies got used to staying dry all night.

Then again, it could be we were just lucky and didn't have nocturnal wetting, which is really common and completely outside the kid's control.

Best wishes.

You know, my 3-1/2 year old has been day trained for nearly 9 mos. but still wears a diaper at night, and it doesn't bother me at all, because 2of my fellow playgroup mom friends tell me their OLDER children (meaning our 5 year olds; we all have 5 year olds and 3 year olds) still wear Pull-Ups at night and area always wet in the a.m. So I figure it's totally normal for a 3 year old (or 4 year old) to still be wet at night. (I didn't experience this with my older daughter; she trained at 3 years + 2 months and was dry at night almost immediately thereafter as well.)

We are trying to not make a huge deal out of it...but keep encouraging her to get up and go potty when she can!

She cried a little and made a fuss about the pull-up, she says she is too big for them. But really her mattress will be ruined if we kept going without the pull-up.

She did give in when I told her we still expect her to get up and go potty - and she will get stickers each day her pull up is dry.

We even made a chart together. She calls it her Kung-Fu Panda chart because I put a panda on it.

I love clip-art and powerpoint! ;)

It is very important to stop drinks at least two hours, some kids earlier (if the wetting is hitting early).

My kids did wear pull ups to bed at first, but It didn't take long to get out of that.

I had a friend who's son had issue. this friend worked two jobs to support his family. So, he would get home late at night (10:30-11) and while getting dressed for his second job, he would get his son up and make him use the restroom. He claims that was the only way they didn't have frequent accidents.

Maybe, for your daughter, if you do try to get her to go before you head to bed, it will become a habit. To be honest, I'm not sure my older boys are awake when they head to the potty in the middle of th night, LOL
